Hotel Hacks I learned from Living on the Road (Free Upgrades, Points & Perks)

Before I became a stay-at-home mom, I worked on the road for months at a time and practically lived in hotels. For six months out of the year, my suitcase was my closet and hotel rooms were home.

Over time, I learned small hotel hacks for families that most travelers don’t know about- from free upgrades to maximizing reward points. Now I use these same strategies anytime we travel as a family.

Traveling with kids can get expensive quickly, but knowing how to make the most out of your hotel stay makes a bigger difference than you might think.

1. Check in Online- But still Visit the Front Desk

I’m all for online check-in. It’s fast and convenient.

But I still stop by the front desk.

Why? Because that’s where opportunities happen.

If you arrive early, politely ask if any rooms are available. You’d be surprised how often early check-in is possible just by asking. The same goes for upgrades. A simple, friendly question like, “Are there any complimentary upgrades available?” can sometimes land you a better room.

It doesn’t always work — but when it does, it’s worth it.

2. Always Sign Up for the Free Loyalty Program

Even if you think you’ll never stay at that hotel brand again, sign up for the free rewards program.

It costs nothing, and points add up faster than you expect.

Many hotels offer small perks just for being a member:

Free bottled water

Complimentary snacks

Faster WiFi

Late checkout options

Those little extras make a difference, especially when traveling with kids.

Never leave free perks on the table.

3. If Work is Paying- Make Sure You Get The Points

If you’re traveling for work and someone else is paying for the stay, make sure your rewards number is attached to the reservation.

Even if the company booked the room, you’re the one physically staying there.

I always made sure the front desk had my loyalty number on file so I could earn the points. Over time, those work stays turned into free nights and valuable status perks.

If you’re sleeping in the bed, you should be earning the points.

4. Always Check for Current Promotions

Before any stay, quickly search online for current promotions from that hotel brand.

Many hotels run promotions throughout the year like:

Double points

Bonus points per stay

Seasonal travel incentives

It takes less than two minutes to check, and sometimes it means earning thousands of extra points for a stay you were already planning to book.

This is one of the easiest ways to maximize your hotel rewards.

5. Look for Status Match Opportunities

If you have elite status with an airline or another hotel brand, check to see if they’re offering a status match.

There are times when hotel brands will match your current loyalty status from a competitor. That can mean instant upgrades, bonus points, late checkout, and better overall treatment during your stay.

Status perks make travel smoother — especially with kids.

6. Know Where the Freebies Are

This one is simple but underrated.

If you’re ever in a pinch and need water, head to the hotel gym. Most hotel fitness centers have a water station, and it’s completely free.

When you’re traveling with kids and trying to avoid overpriced bottled water, little things like that add up quickly.

Also ask the front desk what perks come with your membership level. Sometimes there are snack credits or small benefits that aren’t clearly advertised.

You don’t know unless you ask.

7. If the Room is Too Hot, There’s Usually a Fix

Many hotel thermostats are preset and won’t go below a certain temperature.

But often, there’s a way to override them.

A quick search online for your hotel’s thermostat model can usually show you how to unlock it. It’s a small comfort upgrade, but when you’re traveling with kids — especially babies — room temperature matters.

8. Need Free Water? Go to the Gym

If you’re ever in a pinch and need water, head to the hotel gym.

Most fitness centers have a water station, and it’s completely free. You don’t need to be working out- just bring your bottle and refill it.

When you’re traveling with kids and trying to avoid paying $4-$6 per bottle from the hotel shop, this small trick makes a difference. Over the course of a trip, those savings add up.

It’s simple. It’s easy. And almost every hotel has it.

You don’t have to live on the road to travel smarter.

These hotel hacks for families are simple, but they can completely change how much you get out of each stay.

But if you’re willing to ask a few questions, sign up for free programs, and take two extra minutes to check for promotions, you can make every hotel stay work harder for you.

And when you’re making memories with your family, every little advantage helps.
